Mapo-gu sits on the north bank of the Han River in western Seoul and is one of the city's best-connected, most international districts. It's anchored by Hongdae — the arts-and-nightlife scene around Hongik University — and threaded by five rail lines, including a direct airport train. Rents tend to run lower than Itaewon with strong English access, which is why it draws students, young professionals, and creatives more than families after quiet suburban space.

Getting around
Mapo is served by Seoul Subway Lines 2, 5, and 6, the Gyeongui-Jungang commuter line, and the AREX Airport Railroad — unusually dense coverage for a single district. Its standout for newcomers is a direct airport connection: the AREX all-stop train links Hongik University and Gongdeok stations to Incheon International Airport without a transfer.

Who lives here
Each part of Mapo has its own feel. Hongdae is the epicenter of Seoul youth culture — indie cafes, live-music clubs, designer shops, and street art — and is especially popular with younger expats, international students, and English teachers. Yeonnam-dong and Mangwon are the calmer, more residential versions: Mangwon has a lively traditional market, a strong food scene, and river access. Sangam-dong, to the west, is Digital Media City, a broadcast-and-media cluster (KBS, MBC, SBS, JTBC), paired with World Cup Park along the Han.
