Jung-gu ("Central District") is the literal heart of Seoul: City Hall, the main financial headquarters, Myeong-dong's shopping streets, Namdaemun Market, and palaces like Deoksugung all sit here. It is one of Seoul's smallest and least populous districts by residents, because so much of its land is offices, hotels, and retail rather than housing. If you want to live at the center of everything with unmatched transit, this is it — but expect a dense, commercial, tourist-heavy environment and limited, generally pricey housing stock. Genuine residential neighborhoods exist mostly on the eastern and southern edges rather than in the commercial core.

Jung-gu has arguably the best transit access in all of Seoul. Six subway lines (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) run through the district, and Seoul Station — Korea's main rail gateway — sits on its western edge, offering KTX high-speed trains nationwide plus the AREX Airport Railroad direct to Incheon International Airport. The commercial core around City Hall, Euljiro, and Myeong-dong is blanketed with stations, so most of Jung-gu is within a short walk of the metro. The trade-off is congestion: this is central Seoul, so streets are busy and buses are frequent but crowded.

No airport in the district, but Seoul Station offers the AREX Airport Railroad direct to Incheon International Airport (roughly 45–50 min on the express) — one of the fastest airport links of any Seoul district.

Jung-gu is downtown Seoul, not a bedroom community — its daytime population dwarfs its resident count. The western and central belt (Myeong-dong, Euljiro, Sogong-dong, Namdaemun) is offices, department stores, hotels, and heavy tourist traffic, with very few ordinary residents. Euljiro mixes old printing shops and tool workshops with a fashionable bar-and-cafe nightlife scene ('Hip-jiro'). Real residential life concentrates on the eastern and southern fringes: Sindang, Yaksu, Cheonggu, and Hwanghak-dong are older, denser, more working-class neighborhoods with markets and long-time residents, while Jangchung and Pil-dong near Namsan and Dongguk University are quieter. Housing overall is limited and tends to be expensive for its central location, with more small apartments and officetels than large family complexes.

- Euljiro— Printing/tool workshops and offices by day, trendy 'Hip-jiro' bars and cafes by night
- Sindang— Older, more affordable residential area on the east side; famous tteokbokki town and Jungang Market nearby
- Jangchung / Pil-dong— Quieter neighborhoods on the Namsan foothills, home to Dongguk University
- Namdaemun— Historic wholesale/retail market zone around Seoul Station; commercial rather than residential

Jung-gu is central and very foreigner-facing on the commercial side — Myeong-dong and Namdaemun are among Seoul's most tourist- and traveler-oriented areas, with lots of English signage, currency exchange, hotels, and international retail. As a place to actually live, though, it is not a major expat residential enclave like nearby Itaewon (Yongsan-gu): housing is limited and pricey, and long-term foreign residents are more scattered. The main draw for settling foreigners is centrality and transit rather than a large established expat community. Dongguk University in Jangchung/Pil-dong brings a student population, including international students, and cheaper residential pockets exist in the eastern neighborhoods (Sindang, Hwanghak, Yaksu).
