Gangdong-gu ("east of the river") sits at the far eastern end of Seoul, bordering the city of Hanam. It is primarily a residential district — quieter and more affordable than neighboring Songpa or Gangnam, with a strong family and middle-class character rather than nightlife, business, or student scenes. Cheonho is its main commercial hub, while much of the district is now a large-scale apartment landscape shaped by the Godeok-Gangil new-town development and ongoing reconstruction across Godeok, Gangil, and Myeongil. The Han River and the 6,000-year-old Amsa-dong prehistoric site line its northern edge.

การเดินทาง
Gangdong-gu is served by two Seoul Metro lines: Line 5 (purple) runs across the district and Line 8 (pink) clips its western side, meeting at Cheonho, the district's main transfer hub. Line 5 splits into two branches at Gangdong station — one running northeast toward Sangil-dong/Hanam, the other southeast through Dunchon-dong toward Songpa. There is no Line 9 or Bundang line service inside the district yet, though a Line 9 extension (Phase 4) toward Godeok-Gangil is under construction with a target of around 2028. Commutes into central Seoul are relatively long from here — this is the eastern end of the network — so many residents choose the district for space and price over proximity to downtown.

No direct airport rail. Gimpo International Airport is reachable in one seat via Line 5 west from Cheonho (a long ride across the city). Incheon International Airport requires a transfer — typically Line 5 to Gimpo Airport or Seoul Station, then the AREX airport train.

Gangdong is honestly a residential commuter district, not a destination. Its appeal is space and value: rents and prices run below Songpa and well below Gangnam, drawing families and long-term settlers who want newer apartments for less. The district is in the middle of a major building cycle — the Godeok-Gangil development added tens of thousands of new units in the early 2020s, and Myeongil, Godeok, and Gangil have multiple reconstruction projects underway, so expect construction, brand-new apartment complexes, and rising prices in redeveloped pockets. Cheonho is the lively commercial core with shopping and restaurants; the Han River parks and Amsa Ecological Park give the north a green, outdoorsy feel. Nightlife and international dining are limited compared with Gangnam-side districts.
- Cheonho-dong— The commercial heart — shopping, dining, and the Line 5/8 transfer point; densest and most urban part of the district
- Godeok-dong— Large-scale apartment area, heavily reconstructed into a new-town-style residential zone; popular with families
- Gangil-dong— Newer Godeok-Gangil public-housing development near the Han River; brand-new complexes on the eastern edge
- Myeongil-dong— Established residential neighborhood now undergoing extensive apartment reconstruction
- Amsa-dong— Riverside and greener, home to the prehistoric site and ecological park
สำหรับผู้พำนักชาวต่างชาติ
Gangdong-gu is not a university or student district — there are no four-year universities inside the district (Gangdong University shares the name but is in Chungcheongbuk-do, about an hour from Seoul, and unrelated). It is also not a major foreigner enclave like Itaewon or the Gangnam international zone; the foreign presence here is modest and mostly family- or work-driven rather than student-driven. For newcomers, the draw is practical: relatively affordable newer apartments, good family infrastructure, and Han River access, in exchange for longer commutes into central Seoul and a quieter, more Korean-suburban everyday environment. Everyday services (banking, medical, admin) are geared to residents, so English support is thinner than in central international districts.
