Seongdong-gu sits on the north bank of the Han River, just east of central Seoul and immediately north of Gangnam across the water. It is best known today for Seongsu-dong — a former industrial zone of shoe factories and warehouses that, since around 2011, has become one of Seoul's most fashionable areas for cafes, galleries, boutiques and startups, often nicknamed the "Brooklyn of Seoul." Beyond that trendy pocket, the district is a practical, mid-priced residential area anchored by the major transit hub of Wangsimni and the large Seoul Forest park. It blends genuine industrial and working-class roots with rapid redevelopment and rising rents.

การเดินทาง
Transit is a real strength here, centered on Wangsimni, one of Seoul's few stations where four lines meet without changing platforms (Line 2, Line 5, and the KORAIL Gyeongui-Jungang and Suin-Bundang lines). Seongsu (Line 2) is the busiest station in the district and the gateway to the cafe scene. Line 3 (Oksu, Geumho) serves the western riverside neighborhoods. A new light-metro Dongbuk Line, running from Wangsimni into northeastern Seoul, is scheduled to open in July 2026, further improving connections. There is no airport rail line inside the district — travelers reach Incheon or Gimpo by transferring to the AREX at hubs like Seoul Station or Hongik University, or by airport limousine bus.

Seongdong-gu has two faces. Seongsu-dong is the trend-driven side — repurposed red-brick factories now housing cafes, concept stores, pop-ups and design/media startups, with a planned large startup hub and steadily climbing rents. The rest of the district is more everyday: Wangsimni and Haengdang are dense residential-commercial areas around the transit hub; Oksu and Geumho are hillside riverside neighborhoods with a mix of older housing and newer apartment redevelopment; and Majang is home to one of Korea's largest meat markets. Seoul Forest, a large park by the Han River, is a defining amenity. Overall it is a solidly mid-market district — more affordable and less polished than Gangnam or Seocho, but rapidly gentrifying in its most popular pockets. It is not a luxury enclave, and outside Seongsu it retains a plain, lived-in, working feel.
- Seongsu-dong— Former shoe-factory district turned creative hub — cafes, galleries, boutiques, startups; trendy and increasingly expensive
- Wangsimni / Haengdang-dong— Dense, convenient residential-commercial core around the four-line transit hub and Hanyang University
- Oksu-dong— Hillside riverside neighborhood on Line 3, quiet and close to Gangnam across the river
- Geumho-dong— Residential area undergoing significant apartment redevelopment
- Majang-dong— Home to Majang meat market, one of the largest in Korea — working, industrial character
สำหรับผู้พำนักชาวต่างชาติ
Seongdong-gu is not a traditional foreigner enclave like Itaewon or a study-abroad hub with many universities, but its central location, strong transit and the international appeal of Seongsu-dong draw a growing number of younger residents and creative professionals. The main university anchor for foreigners is Hanyang University near Wangsimni, whose student housing and international programs generate demand for nearby rooms and studios. Everyday services are Korean-first, so expect less English than in Itaewon, but the district is well connected to the rest of Seoul.
