Gwanak's transit backbone is Seoul Subway Line 2 (the loop line), which runs east–west across the north of the district and connects directly to Gangnam, Sadang, and Sindorim without a transfer — a major reason young commuters accept the cheap rents here. Four Line 2 stations sit inside Gwanak-gu: Nakseongdae, Seoul National University Station (Seoul Nat'l Univ.), Bongcheon, and Sillim. Since 2022 the light-rail Sillim Line adds north–south coverage through the district's interior, with Danggok, Sillim, Seowon, Seoul National University Venture Town, and Gwanaksan stations; it transfers to Line 2 at Sillim. One important catch for newcomers: 'Seoul National University Station' on Line 2 is about 2 km from the actual campus (a 10–15 min bus ride), while Gwanaksan Station on the Sillim Line is the stop closest to the SNU main gate. There is no Line 4 station inside Gwanak proper — Sadang, on Lines 2 and 4, sits just over the northern border in Dongjak-gu.

No direct airport rail. For Gimpo (GMP) or Incheon (ICN), ride Line 2 and transfer (e.g. to the AREX/Airport Railroad or Line 9); airport limousine buses also run from stops along the Line 2 corridor. Budget roughly 60–90 min to Incheon.

Gwanak is Seoul's classic 'first landing pad' — the place people move to when they arrive in the city young and on a budget. It has the lowest average household size of any Seoul district, driven by a huge population of university students, civil-service exam-preppers, and early-career singles packed into one-room studios and low-rise villas. Sillim in particular is famous for its goshichon (exam-study lodging) culture and round-the-clock, low-cost food and nightlife. The terrain is notably hilly, and much of the housing stock is older and dense, with redevelopment underway in parts of Bongcheon and Sillim. It is safe to describe Gwanak honestly as affordable, energetic, and working/studying-class rather than affluent or manicured — its appeal is price, transit, and youthful energy, not luxury.

• Sillim-dong— The densest, cheapest, most energetic part of the district; studios, exam-prep lodging, and busy late-night streets around Sillim Station
• Bongcheon-dong— Sprawling hillside residential area around the district office; mix of older housing and active redevelopment
• Sharosu-gil (near Seoul Nat'l Univ. Station)— Gwanak's trendiest strip — independent restaurants, cafes, and bars popular with students and young couples
• Nakseongdae-dong— Quieter, more residential northeast corner with SNU shuttle access and a calmer feel
• Daehak-dong / Seowon (near SNU campus)— Student-oriented area closest to the university, with campus-facing shops and share housing

Gwanak is not a traditional expat district — it has no embassy cluster, few international schools, and is not where corporate relocations typically land. Its foreign community is shaped mainly by Seoul National University: international students, exchange scholars, and researchers live near the campus and along the Line 2 corridor, drawn by cheap rents and easy access to central Seoul. The same affordability attracts young foreign workers and students on tight budgets. Note that Seoul's best-known Korean-Chinese (Joseonjok) enclave and 'Yanbian street' is in Daerim-dong, in a different district (Yeongdeungpo/Guro area) — not in Gwanak's Sillim, a point newcomers often confuse. For foreigners, Gwanak's draw is budget housing and connectivity plus the SNU ecosystem, rather than an established international-services scene.
