Transit is a real strength, built around Line 1, which runs the length of the district, and Cheongnyangni, one of eastern Seoul's biggest rail hubs. Cheongnyangni is a full intercity terminal (KTX, ITX and Mugunghwa trains to Gangneung, Andong and the eastern provinces) on top of four metro/commuter lines, so weekend trips out of the city are easy. Lines 2 (Seongsu branch) and 5 also clip the district. There is no direct airport train from Dongdaemun-gu itself: the usual route to Incheon Airport is Line 1 to Seoul Station and a transfer to the AREX airport line, or an airport limousine bus from the Cheongnyangni area.

Dongdaemun-gu is honest, everyday Seoul rather than a showcase district: affordable, a bit worn in places, and defined by two things — universities and markets. A strong student belt runs across the north around Hoegi and Imun-dong, where three universities sit close together and cheap studios (one-rooms), budget eateries and international-student housing cluster. Cheongnyangni is the commercial and transport heart, home to sprawling traditional markets and, next door, Gyeongdong Market, one of Korea's largest herbal-medicine and produce markets. The district is broadly mid- to lower-cost by Seoul standards, with older low-rise housing alongside a wave of new apartment redevelopment around Cheongnyangni station. It is not a wealthy, polished, or heavily foreigner-oriented district like Gangnam or Yongsan, but it delivers good value and strong rail access.

Dongdaemun-gu's clearest draw for foreigners is education: it is a genuine university district with three institutions clustered in the north, several running active exchange and language programs, so there is a steady international-student population (notably around HUFS and Kyung Hee). Rents are cheaper than central or southern Seoul, which suits students and budget-conscious newcomers, and rail access into the city center and out to the rest of the country is excellent. The trade-off is that this is a locally-oriented, Korean-language-first district: outside the campus zones you will find fewer English-friendly services, international groceries or expat amenities than in Itaewon, Gangnam or Mapo. It is best thought of as affordable, well-connected, student-flavored Seoul rather than an established expat enclave.
