Seoul's most international district — central, diverse, and mid-redevelopment

Yongsan-gu sits in the geographic heart of Seoul, wedged between Jung-gu to the north and the Han River to the south. It is the capital's most visibly international district — a legacy of the long-standing U.S. Army Garrison, dozens of embassies, and Itaewon's decades as the city's foreign-facing quarter. The character swings sharply block to block: ultra-wealthy Hannam-dong and riverside Ichon apartments on one side, older low-rise residential pockets near Seoul Station on the other. Much of the district is now a redevelopment zone, with the former U.S. base and old rail yards slated for the massive Yongsan International Business District and new-town projects, so expect construction and a rapidly changing skyline in parts.

Yongsan is extremely well connected because it holds two of Seoul's biggest rail hubs. Yongsan Station is a major KTX/ITX intercity terminal and sits on Line 1 and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line; Seoul Station, on the district's northern edge, adds Line 1, Line 4, the AREX airport railroad, and KTX. Inside the district, Line 4 runs down through Sookmyung Women's University, Samgakji, Sinyongsan and Ichon, while Line 6 threads the Itaewon corridor via Samgakji, Noksapyeong, Itaewon and Hangangjin. The Gyeongui–Jungang Line also stops at Ichon, Seobinggo and Hannam along the river. Practically, most of Yongsan is a short ride from downtown, Gangnam (via Line 4) and the river.
Yongsan Station
Line 1, Gyeongui–Jungang Line, KTX/ITX intercity rail
Major intercity terminal with a large mall complex; anchor of the Yongsan redevelopment zone
Itaewon Station
Line 6
Gateway to the international nightlife, restaurant and shopping strip
Ichon Station
Line 4, Gyeongui–Jungang Line
Serves the riverside apartment belt and the Japanese-community neighborhood
Samgakji Station
Line 4, Line 6
Transfer point near the War Memorial and central Yongsan
No airport line runs directly through the district, but Seoul Station on the northern edge connects to the AREX express to Incheon International Airport in roughly 45–60 minutes; Gimpo Airport is reachable via Line 4 to Line 5/9 transfers.

Yongsan is really several districts in one. Hannam-dong and the UN Village hillside hold some of the most expensive real estate in Seoul, home to diplomats, executives and celebrities. Ichon-dong along the river is a settled, family-oriented apartment belt with a long-established Japanese community (sometimes called 'Little Tokyo'). Itaewon and neighboring Bogwang-dong are the multicultural, going-out core — foreign food, bars, and the Seoul Central Mosque. Around Cheongpa-dong and Huam-dong, near Seoul Station, you still find older, more modest low-rise residential streets. Overlaying all of it is heavy redevelopment: the vacated U.S. base, Yongsan International Business District, and the Hannam new-town plans mean prices and streetscapes vary enormously and are actively shifting.
- Itaewon / Bogwang-dong— The city's international nightlife and food hub; diverse, lively, English widely spoken
- Hannam-dong— Wealthy, embassy-heavy hillside; premium rents, diplomats and executives
- Ichon-dong— Riverside apartment belt, family-friendly, established Japanese community
- Yongsan / Hangang-daero— Business and redevelopment corridor — corporate HQs, the electronics market, new towers
- Cheongpa-dong / Huam-dong— Older residential near Seoul Station; more affordable, includes Sookmyung campus
외국인 거주자를 위한 정보
Yongsan is the most foreigner-oriented district in Seoul, but its appeal is expat, diplomatic and business rather than student. Itaewon has long been the city's international quarter — a global-village center, foreign groceries, international restaurants, the Seoul Central Mosque, and streets where English gets you far. Hannam-dong concentrates embassies and diplomatic residences and is a common landing spot for well-resourced expats and diplomats, while Ichon draws a notable Japanese community. Several international schools operate in or near the district (including Yongsan International School of Seoul in Hannam). The trade-offs are cost — prime Yongsan is among Seoul's priciest — and the disruption of ongoing large-scale redevelopment.
자치구 안팎의 대학
- Sookmyung Women's University— Private women's university (founded 1906) in Cheongpa-dong; the district's one major campus. Yongsan is not a dense college-town district overall — its foreign draw is diplomatic and expat, not a student belt.
