Affordable riverside living, exam-prep culture, and a real university crowd south of the Han

Dongjak-gu sits on the south bank of the Han River, wedged between glossier Gangnam-side districts and the university belt around Gwanak. It is a mixed residential-and-education district rather than a business or nightlife destination — hilly older neighborhoods, university campuses, and a famous exam-prep quarter at Noryangjin. Rents run noticeably lower than in Gangnam or Yongsan just across the river, which makes it a practical base for students and early-career workers who commute out. It is genuinely well connected by subway despite not being flashy.

移動する
Dongjak is served by five subway lines (1, 2, 4, 7, 9), which is strong coverage for a mid-sized district. Sadang, on the Line 2 loop and Line 4, is the district's busiest hub and a major transfer and bus interchange toward southern Seoul, Gwacheon and Suwon. Line 9 runs along the riverside through Noryangjin, Nodeul, Heukseok and Dongjak stations and gives fast access to Gangnam and Yeouido. There is no direct airport rail line inside the district — Gimpo and Incheon airports are reached by transferring (Line 9 toward Gimpo, or via other lines to the AREX at Seoul Station/Gimpo).
Sadang
Line 2, Line 4
Busiest hub; big bus interchange to Gwacheon/Suwon and southern suburbs, with a busy street-food and bar cluster around the station
Noryangjin
Line 1, Line 9
Gateway to the Noryangjin exam-prep quarter and the Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market
Isu (Chongshin University)
Line 4, Line 7
Line 4–7 transfer point in the south of the district
Dongjak
Line 4, Line 9
Riverside station next to Seoul National Cemetery, with Line 9 access to Gangnam
No airport line runs through Dongjak. For Gimpo (GMP), take Line 9 westbound. For Incheon (ICN), transfer to the AREX airport express (via Gimpo or Seoul Station); allow roughly 60–90 minutes.
どんな人が住んでいるか
Dongjak's real character is affordable, unpretentious, and student-heavy rather than trendy. Neighborhoods like Sangdo and Heukseok are hilly and residential, dotted with older low-rise housing and ongoing redevelopment, and cluster around the Soongsil and Chung-Ang campuses. Noryangjin is defined by its dense hagwon (private cram-school) scene for civil-service and college entrance exams, plus the well-known fish market — expect budget eateries and study cafes over boutiques. Sadang is the loud, convenient transit-and-nightlife edge of the district. It is not a manicured or expensive area, and that is the point: you trade polish and buzz for lower rent, decent transit, and riverside access.
- Noryangjin— Exam-prep (hagwon) hub and the big fish market; cheap eats, study cafes, small rooms geared to test-takers
- Sadang— Busy transit and bus-interchange node with an active street-food and drinking scene; convenient but noisy
- Sangdo— Hilly residential area around Soongsil University; older housing with redevelopment underway
- Heukseok— Riverside slope next to Chung-Ang University; student-oriented rentals and new apartment redevelopment
- Daebang / Sindaebang— Everyday residential neighborhoods on the district's west side near Boramae Park
外国人居住者向け情報
Dongjak is a genuine university district, and that shapes its foreign community — it draws exchange, degree and language students more than corporate expats, so many international residents cluster around the Chung-Ang and Soongsil campuses in Heukseok and Sangdo. Housing tends to be small student-style rooms, officetels and older apartments at prices below the Gangnam-side districts, which is a large part of the appeal. English signage and English-speaking services are thinner here than in central expat zones like Yongsan or Gangnam, so it suits people comfortable with a more local, Korean-language everyday environment. There is no major international-school or embassy cluster in the district.
