Gangseo-gu is a large district in far-western Seoul, best known as the home of Gimpo International Airport. Most of it is practical, mid-to-affordable residential neighborhoods — dense low-rise villa areas like Hwagok and Gayang — rather than a prestige address. Its standout is Magok, a planned district that has become a major R&D and biotech hub (LG Science Park and others), pulling in modern high-rise apartments and offices. For foreigners it appeals most to people who value airport access and lower rents over central-Seoul convenience.

Gangseo-gu's transit is anchored by Gimpo International Airport, which is inside the district and one of the largest interchanges in Korea. Line 5 runs across the district (Banghwa–Gaehwasan–Gimpo Airport–Songjeong–Magok–Balsan–Ujangsan–Hwagok), and Line 9's express service gives a fast ride toward Yeouido and Gangnam (Gaehwa–Gimpo Airport–Magongnaru–Gayang–Deungchon–Yeomchang). Line 2's Sinjeong branch touches the district at Kkachisan. Coverage is good along these corridors but thinner in the airport-adjacent and outer residential pockets, where buses fill the gaps. Commutes to central Seoul are long from the western end but manageable from the Line 9 express stops.

どんな人が住んでいるか
Gangseo-gu is a district of two speeds. Much of it — Hwagok, Gayang, Deungchon, Balsan — is dense, unpretentious, working-class residential built around villas (low-rise multiplex housing) and mid-rise apartments, with rents below the Seoul average. Magok is the opposite: a newly built planned district of glassy R&D campuses, corporate offices and high-end high-rise apartments that has become the district's growth engine. The airport zone shapes daily life at the western edge. Overall it reads as a practical, improving commuter district rather than a nightlife or trophy neighborhood — solid value, with Magok pulling parts of it upmarket.
- Magok— Planned R&D/biotech hub (LG Science Park); newest apartments and offices, priciest part of the district.
- Hwagok— Older, very dense, affordable residential and commercial core near the district office.
- Gayang— Riverside apartment estates on Line 9; settled family residential.
- Balsan / Deungchon— Mixed mid-rise residential with local commercial streets, mid-range rents.
- Gonghang-dong (airport area)— Airport-adjacent zone; convenient for aviation workers, quieter residential otherwise.
外国人居住者向け情報
Gangseo-gu is not a university town or a foreigner-cluster like Itaewon or Mapo; there is no major international enclave. Its foreign residents tend to be people drawn by airport access (aircrew, frequent travelers), Magok's biotech/R&D employers, and cost-conscious renters priced out of central Seoul. Everyday services skew Korean-first, so lower English exposure than in Gangnam or Yongsan, but rents are more forgiving and transit to the rest of Seoul via Line 9 express is workable. Gangseo University in Hwagok is a small private school and does not create a student-town feel.
区内および周辺の大学
- Gangseo University— Small private four-year university in Hwagok-dong; the district's only general four-year campus. Not a large international-student hub.
