Seoul's student belt — Sinchon universities, older residential hills, and mid-range rents

Seodaemun-gu sits in northwestern Seoul, wedged between Mapo, Jongno, Jung, and Eunpyeong. Its defining feature is the Sinchon area, home to Yonsei University and Ewha Womans University — making this one of Seoul's largest and most established student districts. Away from the campuses, Seodaemun is mostly older, hilly residential neighborhoods (Hongje, Hongeun, Namgajwa) with ongoing redevelopment, plus the leafier, more affluent Yeonhui-dong. It is a middle-income residential and university district rather than an office or luxury hub, which keeps rents more moderate than neighboring central Seoul.

移動する
Seodaemun's rail coverage is decent but uneven — the busy southern edge (Sinchon/Ewha) is very well served by Line 2, while the central and northern neighborhoods rely mainly on Line 3 along Tongil-ro and the Gyeongui-Jungang Line. The interior hillside areas (Hongeun, parts of Namgajwa) are farther from stations and depend heavily on buses. There is no airport rail (AREX) stop inside the district.
Sinchon
Line 2
The district's main hub — Yonsei University gateway, dense student nightlife, shopping and eateries
Ewha Womans University
Line 2
Ewha campus and its well-known fashion/shopping street in Daehyeon-dong
Hongje
Line 3
Busiest station in the north of the district; serves Hongje-dong and Hongeun-dong residential areas
Chungjeongno
Line 2, Line 5
Transfer station on the eastern edge, quick access into central Seoul
No airport railroad (AREX) station in the district. The nearest AREX stop is Hongik University station (Mapo-gu), one stop from Sinchon on Line 2, giving direct trains to Gimpo and Incheon airports; airport limousine buses also serve the Sinchon/Yonsei area.
どんな人が住んでいるか
Seodaemun's identity is split between its university core and its older residential hills. Sinchon — spanning Sinchon-dong and Changcheon-dong around Yonsei and Ewha — is a classic Seoul student district: cheap eats, bars, bookshops, study cafes, and a young, transient population. Much of the rest of the district is mid-century residential: Hongje and Hongeun are working-to-middle-income neighborhoods on hilly terrain with a lot of older low-rise housing and steady redevelopment. Yeonhui-dong is the quieter, greener, more affluent pocket favored by families and long-term residents. Namgajwa in the northwest is residential and less central. Overall it reads as practical and unpretentious — not a nightlife-destination like Hongdae, not a business center, but a livable, well-connected place where students and young workers can find relatively affordable housing close to central Seoul.
- Sinchon / Changcheon-dong— Student heart of the district — Yonsei gateway, dense dining and nightlife, mostly young renters
- Daehyeon-dong (Ewha area)— Ewha Womans University and its shopping/fashion street; busy, youthful commercial zone
- Yeonhui-dong— Quieter, greener, more upscale residential area popular with families and some expats
- Hongje-dong / Hongeun-dong— Older, hilly middle-income residential neighborhoods along Line 3, with active redevelopment
- Namgajwa-dong— Northwestern residential area near Myongji University and Gajwa station
外国人居住者向け情報
Seodaemun is a genuinely university-dense district and a well-trodden spot for foreign students and academic staff. Yonsei and Ewha both run large international programs and Korean-language institutes, so Sinchon has long-standing infrastructure for foreigners — international dorms, share houses, one-room (studio) rentals, English-friendly cafes and services. Housing near the campuses skews toward small studios and officetels aimed at students, generally cheaper than Gangnam or central Seoul though prices near Sinchon/Ewha carry a student-area premium. Families and longer-term residents often prefer Yeonhui-dong for its calmer, greener feel. The northern residential areas (Hongje, Hongeun, Namgajwa) are more local and Korean-speaking, with fewer English services but lower rents.
