Seongbuk-gu sits in the mid-north of Seoul, running from the busy student streets around Korea University up into the hills below Bukhansan. It is best understood as one of Seoul's true university districts: four campuses inside its borders keep rents relatively low and the neighborhoods young, walkable, and cheap to eat in. It is not a business or luxury-shopping hub, and much of the housing stock is older low-rise and villa buildings. The one striking exception is Seongbuk-dong, a hillside enclave of large detached homes and foreign ambassador residences that feels nothing like the rest of the district.

移動する
Seongbuk-gu is served by two subway lines plus the Ui LRT light-rail line — but not by the busiest lines (1, 2, 3), so commutes to Gangnam or the western business districts involve a transfer. Line 6 threads the eastern and central parts of the district (Korea University, Anam, Bomun), while Line 4 runs along the west (Gireum, Sungshin Women's University, Hansung University). The Ui LRT adds coverage up into the hillier northern neighborhoods like Jeongneung. Buses fill the gaps in the steeper areas the trains don't reach.
Korea University
Line 6
Student hub around the Korea University campus in Anam-dong; cheap eats and nightlife.
Sungshin Women's University
Line 4 and Ui LRT
Transfer point and a busy shopping/food street in the west of the district.
Hansung University
Line 4
Gateway toward Seongbuk-dong and Samseon-dong; near Hansung University campus.
Bomun
Line 6 and Ui LRT
Central transfer between Line 6 and the Ui LRT.
No direct airport rail. Reaching Incheon (ICN) or Gimpo (GMP) means transferring to the AREX or Line 5/9 via central Seoul — budget roughly 90+ minutes to Incheon, or use a limousine bus.
どんな人が住んでいるか
Seongbuk-gu is a solidly middle-income, student-flavored district rather than a glamorous one. Around Korea University and the other campuses you get lively, affordable streets full of cheap restaurants, cafes, and shared/one-room housing aimed at students. Away from the stations, much of the district is older residential — low-rise apartments and villa buildings on hilly terrain, with several redevelopment areas in progress. The northern edge climbs toward Bukhansan, so many neighborhoods are noticeably sloped. The outlier is Seongbuk-dong itself: a leafy, secluded enclave of large houses, embassies, and chaebol families that sits right next to far more modest older settlements — a sharp income contrast within one district.
- Anam-dong— The Korea University quarter — the district's student heart, cheap food, and one-room rentals.
- Seongbuk-dong— Affluent hillside enclave of detached homes, embassies, and ambassador residences; quiet but less transit-convenient.
- Jeongneung— Large residential neighborhood in the hills near Kookmin University, served by the Ui LRT.
- Donam-dong / Samseon-dong— Denser residential areas along Line 4 near Sungshin and Hansung universities.
- Jangwi-dong— Older residential zone in the east with ongoing redevelopment.
外国人居住者向け情報
Seongbuk-gu draws two very different foreign populations. The larger and more visible group is international and exchange students, concentrated around Korea University in Anam-dong and the other campuses — this supports cheaper student housing, casual dining, and an international-student social scene. The second, much smaller but distinctive, is the diplomatic community in Seongbuk-dong, where dozens of embassies and ambassador residences (including the Chinese, Australian, and Canadian ambassadors' residences) cluster near the old presidential-office area, giving that one neighborhood an unusually international, if wealthy and secluded, character. Outside those two pockets, the district is fairly ordinary residential Seoul.
